The origins of the Museum of Georgia stem from the foundation of the Russian Royal Geographic Society's Museum of the Caucasian Section on May 10, 1852. In 1865, the Museum of the Caucasus was established as part of the aforementioned department, on the initiative of Gustav Rade. The first exhibition was held in 1867. In 1881, the Museum of the Caucasus took an agile office in the fifth international congress of archeologists, held in Tbilisi. In 1919, the museum was renamed the Georgian Museum.

In Feb, 1921, the Georgian Menshevik government made a decision to relocate state treasures from Georgian museums and churches out of Tbilisi, due to Bolshevik aggression towards Georgia. The treasure was first moved to Kutaisi and then to Batumi, but was eventually packed in 248 boxes and tranported to France. In spite of cracking obstacles, the famous Georgian public figure, Ekvtime Takaishvili, preserved and safely returned these treasures to Georgia at the close of the Second World War.

After the Soviet occupation, a new stage of museum evolution began. In this menstruation, the scale of scientific research increased markedly, and unique expeditions were held under the auspices of the country-supported museum. Since 1947, the museum has been known every bit the Simon Janashia museum. Due to tense political situations occurring before and after Georgia's independence from Soviet rule, the museum had to operate extremely carefully in order to protect its collections.

In 2004, the museum was incorporated into the Georgian National Museum complex. Today, the museum has carried out significant reforms in the pursuit of setting modern standards for the preservation and exhibition of Georgian heritage.

The museum currently houses a unique collection of natural and human history, with creature remains dating back xl one thousand thousand years, and rich archaeological and ethnographic collections from the Paleolithic, Neolithic, Bronze, Iron and Middle Ages.

The museum has been nether renovation for several years, and in June 2011, one function of the museum's exhibition halls reopened to the public. Currently, you tin enjoy the permanent exhibition "The Archaeological Treasury" and temporary exhibitions held periodically at the museum.

Alongside the permanent and temporary exhibition area, museum has loftier standard auditorium (renovated in February 2007 equipped with modern technologies and a seating capacity of 110) - this multifunctional public space is the analogue of the BP Conference Hall at the British Museum. Information technology offers the possibilities of having lectures, presentations, meetings, moving picture shows, concerts, and various other educational and cultural activities.

Alongside the auditorium museum has a library equally well as public spaces - buffet, museum shop and courtyard.

162 years history of Simon Janashia Museum of Georgia begins with the establishment of "The Library House" which was founded in 1852 during the reign of Vorontsov, the deputy of the Tsar in Transcaucasia. This thought belonged to Ioann Batonishvili; he wrote nearly it in his "Book of Law" in the forties of the 19 century.

In 1852 the Russian Majestic Library of the Museum of the Caucasian Geographic Society was established. In 1868 the Tbilisi Public Library joined it.

From the 20's of the 20th century collecting of books and the museum values, disseminated in the country, started. The Georgian Museum became the centre of direction and protection of material culture of Georgia. Dissimilar public libraries and museum funds gradually joined the museum.

From foundation of the library until today it is enriched with the scientific literature in Georgian and foreign languages. By today it represents the considerable scientific-educational eye.

1 of remarkable projects, carried out by the Georgian National Museum, was the project of updating-rehabilitation of the library of S.Janashia National Museum of Georgia, the first phase of which has begun since March 2013. Restoration-updating of rare book fund (5024 units) and rare journal and newspaper fund (2372 units) and, for the get-go time for the library existence, the perfect electronic database has been created.

Now the fund of rare copies and the reading hall are on the new identify, on the 6-th floor of the Natural Sciences building.  The literature  in the Georgian and foreign languages, arranged on field of study principle, the various and unique literature on history, ethnographies, archeology, religion, jurisprudence, philology, economic system, natural sciences, medicine and fiction is presented in the fund. Unique church former press books are peculiarly considerable: the Bible, the Gospel etc., the Gospel of Vakhtang VI, printed in Tbilisi and the Bible of Baqar, printed in 1740 in Moscow.

Past today the second stage of the projection - the inventory of fund and creation of the electronic database is finished. Now the third stage of the project has begun - restoration/rehabilitation of the fund and creation of the database. Amongst the funds which are in the library, the fixed capital represents the biggest book-depository which is completed by 280 000 units.

The library of Simon Janashia Museum of Georgian represents the traditional book-depository equipped with the western applied science. After full rehabilitation the library volition assistance in deepening of scientific knowledge and becomes the important scientific, cultural and informative centre.
